Alkosel is an inactivated whole cell yeast (saccharomyces cerevisiae) product containing elevated levels of the ensential trace elements selenium in its natural food form, L(+) selenomethionine
.It is produced by growing yeasts in the presence of measured amounts of selenium. Live yeasts cells absorbs selenium and biochemically transforms it into L(+) selenomethionine and other seleno-proteins.
Selenomethionine is naturally found in edible plant protein and is highly bioavailable. It is the most suitable form of selenium for animal nutritional supplementation
The main advantages of selenium yeast are related to :
- Bioavailability,
- Retention in body tissues,
- Reduced toxicity,
- No pro-oxidative properties,
- Similarity to the natural food form of selenium (L-Selenomethionine).
Selenium is well known for its anti-oxidative properties and its major role in the immune and reproduction functions of the animals. Sodium selenite and selenium yeast differ on several aspects. Indeed, selenium yeast is absorbed differently, stored differently and metabolised differently than inorganic selenium.
